"on the morning of September 22nd, after Joseph had returned from the hill, he placed the article (Nephite interpreters) of which he spoke into my hands, and, upon examination, I found that it consisted of two smooth three cornered diamonds set in glass, and the glasses were set in silver bows, which were connected with each other in much the same way as old fashioned spectacles." -Lucy Mack Smith (History of Joseph Smith by his Mother Lucy Mack Smith)

ReplyDeleteThe illustration of the Urim and Thummim split apart in the middle, is wrong.
ReplyDeleteIn that particular drawing if one were to put them together the triangles would line up exactly, creating just an inverted triangle.
The illustration below it, suggests that when closed, it would form the star of David. For that to be the case, the middle illustration needs to be altered, so that the right hand triangle points in the opposite direction from the one it currently points in. Look at it.
His drawing is accurate. If your claim was true, the triangle on the left would need its bottom corner pointing at the arm of the lens it is in. It does not. The corners of the triangles in each bow point to different parts of their respective bows. When they are super imposed onto each other, all 6 points will be visible. It wont look as pretty as the bottom picture portrays since once triangle was a right triangle and the other was an equilateral triangle.
DeleteApparently there are no additional comments. The only illustration (which matches the text comments on the Urim and Thummim) I've seen is triangular crystal plates (like these) but set in fixed "spectacles' arrangement. This is clever ... but does not match the text or historical narratives, as far as I know. I'd love a reference describing a configuration like this?
